Wind Surfing (Stay at The Aqua)
Portland is considered to be a first class location for windsurfing and is visited by thousands of sailors throughout the year. Together with Weymouth, it hosts a number of annual events including the Four Nations Windsurfing Championship.
Portland Harbour’s sheltered location allows it to be used both by expert and beginner surfers. Measuring 3 x 2 miles, this historical Harbour of national importance can be sailed in any wind direction.
Portland Harbour has three main access points to the water for sailors. The Weymouth Sailing centre to the North of the harbour has showers, a bar and snacks while offering day membership to visitors. Most prefer one of the two car parks on the main road to Portland though, just after crossing the roundabout and Ferry Bridge. To the left is the Ferrybridge boatyard car park where for a daily charge vehicles can be parked but this allows easy access to the water. To the right is the council-run Chesil Beach car park which means carrying all your kit across the road although there is the convenience of a cafe and toilets on site.
Tuition, equipment hire, servicing is readily available from two Wind Surf centres, one of which is located to the left of the road just before the Ferry Bridge roundabout leading into Portland [Visit Windtek Site] and the other based on the east side of Weymouth. [Visit Secondwind Site].
More information on these can be found on theĀ Seconwind Site.
